The Grandstand
The Grandstand at Claudelands in Hamilton is a cherished heritage structure with a storied past. Originally constructed in 1879 for the Cambridge Jockey Club, it was relocated by rail to Claudelands in 1886, where it served as a prominent viewing platform for various racing events, including those hosted by the South Auckland Racing Club, Waikato Racing Club, and Waikato Trotting Club.
Over the years, the Grandstand has undergone several relocations within the Claudelands site, notably in 1926 and again in 2009, when it was moved 500 meters to its current position near Jubilee Bush and restored for use as a function venue. Recognized as a Category II heritage building, it stands as a testament to the region's rich equestrian and community history.
In September 2022, the Grandstand was temporarily closed after borer damage was discovered during routine maintenance following vandalism earlier that year. Remedial work is underway to address the damage, with safety being the top priority. The community eagerly anticipates the Grandstand's reopening, preserving its historical significance for future generations.
