St.Christophers
St Christopher’s Church in Seatoun, Wellington, is a notable example of early 20th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Designed by architect William Fielding in the Romanesque Revival style, the church was constructed in 1932 and officially opened by Governor-General Lord Bledisloe. Its design features include cement-rendered cavity brick walls, brick arches over timber hopper windows, exposed timber roof trusses, and a Marseille tile roof. The church's low eaves and domestic scale allow it to integrate seamlessly into the suburban landscape of Seatoun.
Originally serving as the Seatoun Presbyterian Parish church, the site has been a place of worship since the early 1900s. The first Presbyterian service in Seatoun was organized in 1910, leading to the construction of a wooden church building in 1913. This original structure was later moved and now functions as the Seatoun Village Hall.
In 2015, the church and adjacent hall were purchased by local benefactors to preserve the buildings from potential demolition due to earthquake risk.
Since then, the site has operated as a community venue under the Miramar Peninsula Community Trust, hosting a variety of events, including art exhibitions, workshops, musical performances, and community gatherings.
The church's historical significance and architectural integrity have made it a cherished landmark within the Seatoun community.
