Berhampore Centennial Community Centre & Venue
The Berhampore Centennial Community Centre, located at 493 Adelaide Road in Wellington, is a vibrant hub nestled within the historic Centennial Flats complex. Originally constructed in 1940 as part of New Zealand’s pioneering state housing initiative, the flats exemplify modernist architecture, featuring flat roofs, clean lines, and communal courtyards.
At the heart of the complex lies a distinctive circular building, initially designed as a communal hall for residents. Over time, this space was repurposed, but community advocacy led to its restoration as a community centre.
In 2016, following a significant $7 million refurbishment of the flats, the hall was reopened as the Berhampore Centennial Community Centre.
Today, the centre is managed by Y Central and serves as a focal point for a diverse array of activities and services. Residents and community members engage in yoga classes, art workshops, jewellery making, and social events like Friday potlucks and movie nights. The centre also collaborates with organizations such as Ekta to provide weekly food distributions and hosts health services, including community immunisations.
