Northland
Northland, known in Māori as Te Tai Tokerau, is New Zealand’s northernmost region. Stretching from Kaipara Harbour and Whangārei to Cape Reinga, it is defined by a long coastline, sheltered harbours, sandy beaches, native forests, farmland, and a warm climate.
Whangārei is the region’s largest city, while other well-known centres include Kerikeri, Paihia, Russell, Kaikohe, Dargaville, Kaitaia, and Mangawhai. The Bay of Islands is one of Northland’s best-known destinations, valued for tourism, boating, fishing, and maritime history.
Northland also holds a central place in New Zealand history. Waitangi is where the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed on 6 February 1840, while nearby Russell, formerly Kororāreka, was an important early port and settlement. The region has deep Māori cultural significance and is home to many iwi and hapū.
Waipoua Forest contains Tāne Mahuta, New Zealand’s largest known living kauri tree. Cape Reinga overlooks the meeting of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean.
